Disability Character Profile - Brian Potter

Brian Potter

Brian Potter is one of the main characters in That Peter Kay Thing and Phoenix Nights. He is the owner of the Phoenix Club which is the local working mens club in the television series.

He is semi-paralyzed, and travels around in a wheelchair. It is quoted in an episode of That Peter Kay Thing that he ran The Aquarius Club and that is where he became semi-paralyzed as he lost the use of his legs. Supposedly a fruit machine fell on top of him and pinned him up against the serving hatch, this caused him to be semi-paralyzed and to he was in a coma.

Brian Potter is represented quite fairly, but in some cases it is very unrealistic. For example the story of how he lost his legs seems quite unrealistic. Making it slightly unrealistic adds to the comedic value which is represented making Brian Potter quite a laughable character. Sometimes he is represented as being quite pathetic and grumpy. The clip below shows him not being able to participate in daily life without the aid of others which sometimes happens, but it is mainly due to the laziness of the character.
